NSW e-scooter and e-bike rules, tracked

Lanewise About

About Lanewise

Lanewise explains the rules for e-scooters and e-bikes in New South Wales in plain English, and tracks every change to them: bills, new laws, trials and reviews, each with its date and a link to the official record.

Who runs it

Lanewise is run by a small, independent Australian publishing business. It is not a government site, a rider group, a retailer, a law firm or an advocacy organisation, and it does not speak for anyone but itself. It has no members, collects no signatures, takes no donations and sells nothing.

Pages are written and checked by the Lanewise editor. The editor is not a lawyer and does not give legal advice.

Where we stand

On one question we have a view: we think private e-scooters should be legal on NSW roads under rules like the ones Transport for NSW drafted in October 2024, and that the Government should set a start date. We say so on the pages about the reform, we set out the concerns fairly beside it, and we keep that view out of the factual guides. We are not connected with any political party and never tell anyone how to vote.

Where the rules come from

Every rule, date and fine on this site is checked against an official source: the NSW Parliament's bill records, NSW legislation, the NSW Government's ministerial releases, and Transport for NSW. Other states' rules come from their own transport departments. Where we quote a lawyer, a motoring body or a news report, we name them and link to them. Each page lists its sources and the date we last read them.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, sometimes quickly. Before you buy or ride, check Transport for NSW, and if you have been fined or charged, speak to a lawyer.

How we keep pages current

An automatic check reads the official sources behind the tracker every day, and an editor reviews anything that changes. When a rule changes, the change goes into the law tracker with its date and source, and every page it affects is updated and re-dated. If a page and an official source ever disagree, the official source is right and the page is wrong; we fix it as soon as we find it.

The photos

Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under Creative Commons or public domain licences, and each one is credited under the picture with its author and licence. Photos taken in other states are captioned with where they were taken. The charts are drawn by us from the official figures.

This web address

This domain, myebikeonline.com.au, used to be the address of an online e-bike shop that closed. Lanewise is not that shop and is not connected with MyeBike, My Ebike QLD Pty Ltd or any other business that has used the MyeBike name. Old shop addresses now lead to the NSW e-bike rules page. Nothing on Lanewise is for sale.
